Botox®, What Is It?

Botox®, also known as botulinum toxin, has become incredibly popular. Not only is it an easy and non-invasive way to rejuvenate your skin, but studies have also shown that improving your physical appearance to match the way you feel has positive effects on mental health. Of course, Botox® is not for everyone, so I have set out to answer some of the most common questions that I get asked by patients at our dermatology clinic in Edmonton.

Is Botox® for Me?

Botox® injections are a simple way to reduce visible fine lines and wrinkles to create a glowing complexion. Botox® works by relaxing the active muscles underneath your wrinkles in areas such as the forehead, the glabellar lines known as “11’s”, and the areas around the eyes known as “crow’s feet” to smoothen out their appearance on your skin. While Botox® cosmetic treatments get a lot of attention in the media, many of my patients consider it as an option to manage excessive sweating and the effects of their migraines.

Is Botox® Natural?

Yes! In fact, long before dermatologists started using botulinum toxin for the treatment of wrinkles, it was found in the environment. The version we use today is still an exact replica of the original natural protein.

At What Age Should I Start Using Botox®?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question.

It depends on two main factors:

1) your current appearance

2) your desired appearance

Botox® is most commonly used for wrinkles in areas such as the forehead where there are constant muscle contractions underneath the skin. When you come in for a consultation, we will sit down to examine the condition of your skin and talk about the type of look you are hoping to achieve. Based on this initial assessment we will be able to determine whether Botox® will be an effective treatment for you.

Are There Different Types of Botox®?

Although Botox® is technically a brand name, it is often referred to as the treatment category as well.  This is similar to how some people may use the brand name Kleenex to refer to all types of tissue. Some other common brands that you may hear of botulinum toxin include Dysport and Xeomin.

Does Botox® Hurt?

Not really! Botox® is dissolved in a liquid to create a similar consistency to water. Since it is so thin, it can be injected through an ultra-small syringe. At worst, most patients describe the discomfort as mild, often comparing it to a mosquito bite.

When Will I See My Botox® Results?

It is important to remember that each treatment plan is unique and customized to each individual patient. This means that the dosage, placement as well as results will vary depending on the different variables at play. In general, results are typically seen around 3-5 days after your treatment and can last up to 3 months. However, with repeated Botox® treatments, the effects can last longer since the underlying muscles stop reinforcing the wrinkles on the skin above.

Dermatologists can properly assess your skin, diagnose any underlying skin conditions, and provide you with the information needed to choose the best treatment. If you are considering getting Botox® in Edmonton and are looking for a skin specialist, look no further. My team and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
