That’s right, Resolution Time is back. Whether we admit it out loud or not, we all do “New Year, New Me” on some level and it’s a safe bet after all the holiday treats (damn you dear, sweet mother Massie and your irresistible carrot cake) healthy living and weight loss are on our minds and in our goals.
Sadly, not all areas of fat on our body are as easy to shed with only healthy eating, exercise and avoiding my mother. One particularly pesky place (only alliteration in this post, I promise) is the submental region, colloquially referred to as the “double-chin”. This area has strong genetic and age components, and even the most fit calorie-counters among us can struggle to slim it down. It can change the shape of our face drastically and lower our confidence in how we present ourselves to the world.
Thankfully, modern medicine comes to rescue with deoxycholic acid! You might have heard of it by the brand names of Belkyra or Kybella, but whichever name it uses, its powerful treatment for permanent results in treating submental fat. You read that right, I said permanent.
Deoxycholic acid destroys the membranes around fat cells, releasing the fat itself so that our system can clear it away and eliminate it from our body. Once these fat cells are gone, they don’t come back. Typically, patients require between 2 and 4 treatments, spaced apart by 1 month each, to get a full treatment result, dissolving the fat and reshaping their submental region.
The benefits go even further than just double-chin. A full deoxycholic acid treatment course also helps us to reshape our jawlines, giving a sharper, younger, less saggy look. If we combine it with jawline and/or chin fillers with our Juvederm products, the results can be even more amazing. Deoxycholic acid is one of my favourite tools to use in cosmetic treatments and facial reshaping.
The treatment is quick and we make it comfortable with topical numbing for the injections and ice for the brief inflammation sensations that come as the product works its magic and melts the fat cells away forever. There is no tedious aftercare at home and the temporary post-treatment swelling is well worth the results, which are permanent. (Did I mention that enough yet?)
